Mermaid Parade 2019 | Coney Island

Summer doesn’t start in NYC until the Mermaid Parade steps off in Coney Island. It’s one of Kate’s favorite events! She attends the glittering celebration of creativity and self-expression in Brooklyn every year. With Olivia’s work schedule, she doesn’t always get to attend, but we were so excited to get to go together again this year!

The best part of the Mermaid Parade is it’s inclusivity. It’s an ocean of diversity, body positivity, artistic freedom, and Pride. There is no shortage of color, sequins, confetti, or community. LGBTQ+ pride flags are on display up and down Surf Avenue, flying both with the participants and in the crowd. People of all ages come together to dance in the streets in aquatic themed costumes. Parents carry babies, children blow bubbles, dogs dressed in fins trot beside their families. Some mer-people throw out necklaces and candy. Others play music and dance. Some share their sea spin on social and political messages. Everyone is smiling, waving, and having fun. It’s an accepting, welcoming, positive space to enjoy the beginning of summer along the shore.
